Bio and

background

Dan studied music at the University of Ottawa on tuba with Nicholas Atkinson.  Departing early for a day job in computer program, he continued playing tuba in community ensembles.  His first foray into conducting was with The Brass Conspiracy, a symphonic brass ensemble he founded in Toronto.

After moving to Haliburton, in cottage county North East of Toronto, he became a co-director of the Highlands Wind Symphony (HWS), concentrating on symphonic works transcribed for wind ensemble.

In Spring of 2012, an experiment was undertaken to see if there would be interest in forming an orchestra in Haliburton county.  The group performed two numbers as guests of the HWS under the baton of Glen Carter.  That summer, a board was formed for the new Highlands Chamber Orchestra and Dan was appointed Music Director.  They are now in their 5th season performing overtures, suites, symphonies, concerti, vocal solos and movie music.

Style and goals

Dan is vigilant with timing and tuning, cognizant of the fact that so many other aspects of an exciting and energetic performance stem from these two points.

The creation and maintenance of balance both within & between sections is important to Dan. Soaring strings, spritely woodwinds, bold brass and driving percussion: each have their moments in context, but one needs to be mindful not to bury important countermelodies and inner harmonies that tell important stories.

Dan knows it's important to work closely with stakeholders to create relevant and exciting programming for an orchestra and for an audience. He solicits input from board members and section leads to strike the desired balance between traditional orchestral repertoire and movie music, musicals and pops.

Vocal and instrumental soloists are important to performances as well. They showcase talent from within the orchestra, and in the broader community. All of these elements develop community pride in the orchestra and help grow the audience.

While serious about quality of performances, Dan fosters a casual and fun atmosphere and encourage open communication between me and the musicians. Community orchestras are about education, mentorship, long-term growth, and camaraderie - but especially about passionate music-making!
